Acquired Brain Injury
People with acquired brain injuries, often incurred in motor vehicle accidents, face severe challenges. Their injuries may impair diverse cognitive and physical functions. This presents obstacles to maintaining connections with friends, family and colleagues. These injuries also impede their ability to work and lead independent lifestyles.
In 2003, Boundless invested $1,000,000 in a new facility that is accessible to people with significant mobility impairments. This ignited powerful interest in the ABI community around Boundless programs to serve as an alternative instrument of rehabilitation for ABI clients. The program blossomed into a province-wide initiative, and has doubled in scale since inception.
Our program is noted by our consumers and their caregivers as an extremely effective adjunct to ongoing day treatment programs and services. Our own qualitative research has confirmed this finding as well. We offer people with ABI a chance to accomplish feats that are truly extraordinary.
The most powerful outcome of our ABI program is that clients emerge more independent, with greater motivation to go beyond their limits in their everyday lives. They pursue work, education, fitness and friendships with more vigor and enthusiasm.
Independent research has confirmed that family members are key figures in helping ABI clients move forward in attaining independence. We are working on a new family model of program delivery. This is our key focus as we move forward with our ABI program.
Boundless currently delivers an Ontario wide ABI project serving 120 individuals across 8 jurisdictions across eastern, southern and southwestern Ontario.
